Powell – the Crown Jewel of Delaware County

Powell OH 43065Last night was a warm summer evening and as I drove through Powell, I couldn’t help but notice the three ice cream shops (Graeters, Handels, & Jeni’s) all had very large groups of families standing in line or sitting on the patios, enjoying their cooling, sweet treat. There should be a law that prevents 3 gourmet shops from locating within a ¾-mile distance with all located on the main drag thru town. That’s cruel & unusual punishment to our willpower. :-)

But aside from that “flaw” to Powell’s downtown, it reinforces what a great place the Powell area is to live. It’s a top pick of places that buyers want to buy homes if they have the means (the average price so far this year is nearly $380,000 for a 3400 sq ft home). When people mention “Powell”, chances are they are including the Liberty Twp area as well. The 43065 zip code has irregular boundaries but basically extends from the Olentangy River on the east over to the Scioto River to the west. To the north, it extends a little north of Home Rd. (Read more about the boundaries)

Village Green, Powell OH 43065The area offers so much for its residents from plenty of dining opportunities to numerous golf courses to the most famous of all – the Columbus Zoo, made famous by Jungle Jack Hanna. There is a YMCA, a community pool and a skateboard park for more family activities. If you’re into antiques, the downtown is known for all its small shops that sell antiques as well as unique handmade crafts.

In 2009, I moved from Real Living’s Worthington office (now closed) to the new Powell office. Although I really work out of my home office, I have enjoyed being with the people in the Powell office. Just like the City, the people are friendly, professional and a joy to be around. Oh … and … the office is just across the parking lot from Handel’s ice cream shop! ;-)

Walk to Scioto River from this home that’s for sale

This is your next home if you want to live convenient to Powell or Dublin, yet want to feel like you’re living “away from it all”. Enjoy your 1.2 acres with mature trees, or take a stroll down the drive, across the road to be at the Scioto River’s edge. Or for other entertainment, you’re minutes from Powell or Dublin restaurants or shopping at Polaris & Tuttle Malls. Or just hop into your own private hot tub on the large tiered deck.

If you’re into “grown-up toys”, there’s a really nice detached 24′x32′ garage building that would be a great workshop or storage for smaller boat, jet skis, snowmobiles, ATV’s, cycles or whatever you want to do in there. It has 220 electricity and workbench as well. The oversized 2-car attached garage has an epoxy-coated floor for protection.

There’s a spacious (2452 sq ft) 4 BR home as well. It has formal rooms (LR, DR), a terrific kitchen with an eating area that overlooks the tiered deck. All kitchen appliances stay including the Jenn-Aire range. Notice there’s plenty of cabinet storage for all your entertaining supplies & under-counter lighting for easier food prep. You’ve love time spent in the comfortable family room with gas log, raised hearth brick fireplace and nearby built-in bookcase. Each floor has a full bath available.

It’s almost time for the Taste of Powell again!

Taste of Powell, Powell OH 43065People are starting to make plans to attend this year’s Taste of Powell. It occurs April 28 at the Water’s Edge Events Park at the Columbus Zoo in Powell.

Read my article from last year’s event

I attended last year and plan to attend this year’s event as well. For only $25/ticket you can “graze” through a variety of restaurant dishes. You can buy your tickets in advance at the Powell Chamber, Culver’s, Local Roots and Vittoria. Visit the Taste of Powell website for complete info.

Maybe I’ll see you there this year … I’ll be the one stuffing my face! ;-)

Things to do over the July 4th holiday

copyrighted fireworksSouthern Delaware County has a number of things you can do over the holiday weekend if you’re looking for quick, inexpensive sojourns. There are numerous places you can have an impromptu picnic or a relaxing view of one of the waterways. I’ve previously written about and taken photos of many of the sites. Maybe this list will give you some ideas. Follow the links I’ve provided to get more information.

FIREWORKS

Naturally, the focus is on fireworks and the big Red, White & Boom downtown Columbus party. Most of the other cities and suburbs have their own displays. My family either goes to Hilliard or to Marysville.

COLUMBUS ZOO

The Columbus Zoo is always a popular place year round. With warm weather forecast, you’ll also enjoy Zoombezi Bay, the waterpark that is part of the zoo. Photos of my trip to the zoo.

HIGHBANKS PARK

Always a popular park for picnics or walks along the many trails. There are lots of open spaces for throwing the Frisbee® or playing on gym equipment. There is only one trail, the Coyote Trail, that allows dogs, although dogs are allowed in the picnic area (leashes required).

WATER FUN

If you want to enjoy viewing or being on the water, you can visit Hoover Reservoir, Alum Creek Reservoir, Scioto River or the Olentangy River. There are picnic areas in many places around the water.

DOG PARK

Your 4-legged family member might enjoy spending some time at Alum Creek Dog Park. There are two fenced areas for big dog or little dogs, plus, they have their own fenced beach area.

HAYDEN RUN FALLS

Although located in Franklin County, Hayden Run Falls is an interesting place to visit if you want something to do for only an hour or two. View a slideshow or watch a video with music.

GERMAN VILLAGE

German Village is also located in Franklin County, south of downtown Columbus. If you’re not going to grill your own brats, you can treat yourself to Schmidt’s. Of course, don’t pass up those huge cream puffs that Schmidt’s is known for. They don’t have any calories when it’s a holiday. :-)

Have Fun and Don’t Drink & Drive … or Boat!

A nibble here … a nibble there … at the Taste of Powell

Taste of Powell at Columbus Ohio ZooLast night I attended the Taste of Powell at the Columbus Zoo, sponsored by the Powell Chamber. The evening allowed the many restaurants around Powell to promote their most delicious fare to the 500 attendees.

I had a great time. I saw a couple who were former neighbors when we both lived in our “first” homes. Thanks to smartphones, we shared updated photos of our kids – have they really gotten THAT old? – and of course, our current dogs.

A neighbor that lives close to one of my listings was there. He owns a B & B and when we last talked, I told him I could help him promote his B & B by doing a video for him. I’ll be doing that in the next couple weeks. He thinks I’m wonderful. :-)

Twitter friends IRL

I also got to meet IRL three people whom I follow on Twitter. That’s always fun because you come to know people online although we’ve never met in person. That’s why it’s helpful to look like your avatar.

Taste of Powell at Columbus Ohio ZooThe restaurants set up their offerings in two enclosed buildings which provided ample opportunity for people to “graze”. Little plates make you feel less guilty about the calories – as long as you don’t count the number of little plates.

Some of the favorite dishes that I especially enjoyed was the crab from Lost Shepherd, the Oriental chicken salad from Gooseneck Tavern (best I’ve ever had), the Kahlua Fudge cupcake from Cakes of Distinction (yes, it was as sinful as it sounds), and the cinnamon buns from Costco. I bypassed the gyro from Greek Express because I have a “frequent flyer” card with them and the Culver’s chocolate sundae – another place I stop at frequently. I don’t often have sushi, but Kogen’s dish cleared my sinuses with the horseradish! I had a really good roast pork sandwich but I forget what restaurant had that. Remember, I was grazing.

If, by now, you’re salivating, be sure to try some of the eateries in Powell. There are many more for you to choose – just ask for the little plates so you won’t feel the guilt.

The Taste of Powell is coming Apr 29

Powell Ohio signThe Taste of Powell will be held this Thursday at the Columbus Zoo’s Water’s Edge. The event will feature specialties from many of the local Powell restaurants, and is being promoted by the Powell Chamber of Commerce.

Per an agent in my office, who has been working on the event, most of the 500 tickets have been sold. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased online (although mailing deadline has passed) or at three local restaurants. Specific details are available on Taste Casting’s blog site.

A number of agents in my Powell office are planning to attend. I purchased my ticket at Culver’s on Powell Rd. A gal has been tweeting some of the food dishes that the various restaurants or food shops will be bringing. Based on the yummy-sounding dishes, it sounds like a good night to wear  ::S~T~R~E~T~C~H:: PANTS.

Be sure to say ‘hi’ if you see me.
