Delaware County still leads Ohio’s population growth

Copyrighted Village at KinsaleDelaware County’s growth has slowed since the early 2000′s but it’s growth is still the best in Ohio according to Census Bureau data released this week. The average rate between 2000-2010 was 4.7%. The current rate is 1.8%. Between July 2010 to July 2011, Delaware County added 3,103 people. The southern half of the county continues to be the most popular with new home buyers locating around Powell, Lewis Center and Galena/Hoover Reservoir areas.

The seven counties in central Ohio had growth that kept the State from actually losing population. Only one county – Madison – lost population. The other counties in central Ohio grew …

  • Delaware – up 1.8%, from 175,238 to 178,341
  • Franklin – up 1.1%, from 1,165,789 to 1,178,799

Ohio Adds Most Jobs In Nation

EmploymentFebruary was another good month for Ohio’s unemployment rate.¹ The rate was 7.6% which is down from 7.7% in January. In Feb 2011, just after Gov Kasich was inaugurated the rate was 8.9%, so we’re doing well.

  • Workers unemployed in Feb: 443,000
  • Workers unemployed in Jan: 447,000
  • Workers unemployed 12 mos ago: 517,000

Ohio’s employment rose by 28,300 people in February.² That meant that Ohio added the most jobs in the Nation! (Texas was 2nd with 27,900 new people employed.)

  • Workers employed in Feb: 5,147,600
  • Workers employed in Jan: 5,119,300

Hummers “might” be ba-a-ack

I’ve fed the hummingbirds for years, and typically I watch for the male to arrive around Mother’s Day. Males arrive first, then the female comes a few days later.

The male lets me know he’s arrived by buzzing my front windows where the feeder is usually located if I haven’t yet put it out. He hovers within a foot of the window, looking toward the window as if to say, “HEY LADY!”. I find this nothing short of amazing considering that this tiny little bird just finished his trek from the Gulf. Nature can be so phenomenal.

A Twitter friend just tweeted a tracking map that the hummers have already been sited in the area as well as north of here. I guess the warm weather has encouraged them to fly north much earlier than usual. I’ll have to watch for my little guy to return.

I lived in Tucson for a period of time and thoroughly enjoyed the various hummers that live there year-round. Here in central Ohio, we only see the Ruby-throated hummingbird. In Tucson, there were more varieties. I especially enjoyed the tiny Anna’s and Costa’s hummingbirds. The photos in these links don’t do justice to the awesome brilliance of the feathers in the sun.

If you normally feed hummers, you may want to start watching for them to appear. If you haven’t fed hummers in the past and want to start attracting them, I’ve been told that you must put feeders out before they arrive so you can capture them early. They’re very territorial and “protect” their feeder, so you might be able to attract the younger ones who are looking for their own territorial feeder.

Feeder Hints:

  • For food, I use ¼ cup of sugar to 1 cup of hot water. No food color is necessary.
  • Ants and hornets are likely to become a problem. Check out Wild Birds Unlimited for a plastic ‘gizmo’ that hangs above the feeder with a sticky ant repellent in it. It worked very well. For the hornets, there are bee guards, but I’ve found the hornets still buzz around trying to capture the sugar water.
  • There are several plants that hummingbirds really like. They like the red tube flowers, especially fuchsias, if you have a place to hang them. Wild Birds can help you select flowers.
  • There are two Wild Birds Unlimited stores that I visit. One is in Dublin on Riverside Dr and the other is in Westerville on State Street.

Columbus Top Mortgage Lenders

Columbus Business First just published its “Top of the List” for Mortgage Lenders. The criteria for the list was the number of first-mortgage loans. Many of the home mortgage lenders saw a decrease in the number of loans issued for 2011 which follows the drop-off in home sales.

The Top 5 on the list and the numbers of home loans closed is:

  1. Fifth Third – 6271 loans
  2. Union Savings – 4491 loans
  3. Huntington Bank – 3736 loans
  4. Wells Fargo – 2650 loans
  5. Third Federal – 1653 loans

Vote Murph for President 2012

I’ve finally decided to endorse a candidate for President 2012. The current four candidates are severely flawed so I support the third party candidate from The Kibble Party.

I’ve interviewed him personally and here’s what I learned:

  • He was born in the USA and has actual papers to prove it.
  • He’s not going to change the U.S. Constitution because he doesn’t even know what it is.
  • He’s been neutered so he doesn’t care about birth control. Believes you’re free to do your own thing.
  • He’s not going to tell you which vet or medical plan you must use.
  • He supports a ban on toys and food made in China, especially those made for dogs and cats.
  • He’s a strong supporter of freedom … free to sleep on the couch or bed; free to take long naps; free to chase rabbits or cats; free to eat human food.
  • Regarding foreign policy, the only bombs he has are laying in the backyard.
  • Only blames his parents for his “short-comings”. Won’t blame everyone else when he gets in trouble.

Gotta love central Ohio weather … ever changing!

Has this been a great year or what!! Hardly had a winter. And spring has felt more like early summer. Since I don’t like being cold, I’m loving this.

Yesterday on Twitter, someone said they were too hot. We’ve been in the low 80′s for a few days, which is VERY unusual for central Ohio. Just to make sure you appreciate how good we have it this year, I pulled up some old photos I’ve taken in past years … just to remind you how special this year is.

As we say in central Ohio, if you don’t like today’s weather … stick around … it’ll change tomorrow.
