2012 Taste of Powell – A Great Event

The Powell Chamber of Commerce sponsored another Taste of Powell where over 20 restaurants featured their favorite dishes for us to test-taste while listening to a band. The annual event is held at the Columbus Zoo at the Water’s Edge pavillion. The weather this year was perfect – a warm pleasant evening.

Walk to Scioto River from this home that’s for sale

This is your next home if you want to live convenient to Powell or Dublin, yet want to feel like you’re living “away from it all”. Enjoy your 1.2 acres with mature trees, or take a stroll down the drive, across the road to be at the Scioto River’s edge. Or for other entertainment, you’re minutes from Powell or Dublin restaurants or shopping at Polaris & Tuttle Malls. Or just hop into your own private hot tub on the large tiered deck.

If you’re into “grown-up toys”, there’s a really nice detached 24′x32′ garage building that would be a great workshop or storage for smaller boat, jet skis, snowmobiles, ATV’s, cycles or whatever you want to do in there. It has 220 electricity and workbench as well. The oversized 2-car attached garage has an epoxy-coated floor for protection.

There’s a spacious (2452 sq ft) 4 BR home as well. It has formal rooms (LR, DR), a terrific kitchen with an eating area that overlooks the tiered deck. All kitchen appliances stay including the Jenn-Aire range. Notice there’s plenty of cabinet storage for all your entertaining supplies & under-counter lighting for easier food prep. You’ve love time spent in the comfortable family room with gas log, raised hearth brick fireplace and nearby built-in bookcase. Each floor has a full bath available.

Why did southern Delaware County grow so fast?

newspaperA local newspaper reporter called me this morning to discuss the housing growth that has occurred in southern Delaware County this decade. I’m usually nervous about talking with the media for fear of being mis-quoted. I hope he doesn’t do that.

After our conversation was over, I thought more about why the growth has occurred into southern Delaware County. I think there are several events that occurred that set the stage for it.

  • I-270 made it easy to go from one suburb to another. Businesses (jobs) built up around the various interchanges. Suburbs located inside 270 were land-locked with limited room to expand further housing.
  • Suburbs, like Dublin or Powell close to the freeway, had room to expand their borders. They also had easy access to the freeway with major roads such as Rt 315, Sawmill Rd and Rt 33 already in place.
  • Lewis Center’s growth was impacted when Banc One (now Chase) built the huge employment center and the nearby Polaris Mall was added, both outside of I-270. Old State Rd provided access to that employment so many housing subdivisions were built off of that road.
  • Golf Courses have played an important part to the housing growth as well. Dublin already had Jack Nicklaus’ huge Muirfield Village but then Arnie’s Tartan Fields was built north of Muirfield. Powell began with Wedgewood, then added Scioto Reserve and Kinsale (Golf Village). Shamrock and Safari are nearby, but they are not lined with homes the way the other courses are.
  • The southwest part of the county contains both the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers. I’m not a geologist but it seems there is more variance to the terrain between the rivers, providing more opportunity for the wooded, ravine lots that many home buyers like.
  • The southeast part of the county has the big water reservoirs with Alum Creek and Hoover. Both offer boating opportunities, albeit they have different motor restrictions.
  • Dublin and Powell already had groceries and retail, but those types of commercial buildings have expanded to keep pace with the housing. Dublin added Perimeter Mall and Powell added the shopping at Powell Rd and Sawmill Pkwy.
  • Some of the northern most housing developments in the Lewis Center area were several miles from groceries, gas stations, and fast-food eateries, but with the recent addition of some new stores along Rt 23 at Lewis Center Rd, that is changing.
  • Columbus State Community college recently opened along Rt 23 and Ohio Health is at a certain stage of providing convenient health care for the area.
  • More growth along Rt 23 between Powell Rd and Cheshire Rd was on the drawing board but it has been put on hold due to the economic downturn.
  • Southern Delaware County is primarily served with four school districts: Dublin, Olentangy, Westerville and Big Walnut. Olentangy covers the largest geographical part of the southern part of the county.

Like thousands of others, I’ve found the county to be a great place to live and work. If you would like to join us, give me a call and we’ll go house shopping.

The Murph goes to Alum Creek Dog Park Beach

This 4th of July, it was a hot afternoon and seemed to be a good day to take The Murph to Alum Creek Dog Park Beach. It was very busy with dogs enjoying time in the two fenced areas as well as the enclosed beach area. Murph doesn’t play nice with others, so we stayed outside the off-leash fenced areas. The beach area is better for the big guys because of depth of strong waves.

I took a video of the big guys having a great time in the water. I suspect lots of naps were taken on the ride home … after the towel-off before getting in the car. Nothing quite like the smell of a wet dog! Ew-w-w-w.

Murph went in up to his knees, which means he didn’t go very far. The waves were just a bit much for him. When your legs are only 3″ long, it’s a problem.

Things to do over the July 4th holiday

copyrighted fireworksSouthern Delaware County has a number of things you can do over the holiday weekend if you’re looking for quick, inexpensive sojourns. There are numerous places you can have an impromptu picnic or a relaxing view of one of the waterways. I’ve previously written about and taken photos of many of the sites. Maybe this list will give you some ideas. Follow the links I’ve provided to get more information.

FIREWORKS

Naturally, the focus is on fireworks and the big Red, White & Boom downtown Columbus party. Most of the other cities and suburbs have their own displays. My family either goes to Hilliard or to Marysville.

COLUMBUS ZOO

The Columbus Zoo is always a popular place year round. With warm weather forecast, you’ll also enjoy Zoombezi Bay, the waterpark that is part of the zoo. Photos of my trip to the zoo.

HIGHBANKS PARK

Always a popular park for picnics or walks along the many trails. There are lots of open spaces for throwing the Frisbee® or playing on gym equipment. There is only one trail, the Coyote Trail, that allows dogs, although dogs are allowed in the picnic area (leashes required).

WATER FUN

If you want to enjoy viewing or being on the water, you can visit Hoover Reservoir, Alum Creek Reservoir, Scioto River or the Olentangy River. There are picnic areas in many places around the water.

DOG PARK

Your 4-legged family member might enjoy spending some time at Alum Creek Dog Park. There are two fenced areas for big dog or little dogs, plus, they have their own fenced beach area.

HAYDEN RUN FALLS

Although located in Franklin County, Hayden Run Falls is an interesting place to visit if you want something to do for only an hour or two. View a slideshow or watch a video with music.

GERMAN VILLAGE

German Village is also located in Franklin County, south of downtown Columbus. If you’re not going to grill your own brats, you can treat yourself to Schmidt’s. Of course, don’t pass up those huge cream puffs that Schmidt’s is known for. They don’t have any calories when it’s a holiday. :-)

New Luxury Condos in The Residences Of Creekside, Gahanna

There is a new option to luxury urban condos that offers suburban living and many other benefits. I was invited to attend a special blog gathering last night where The Stonehenge Company introduced its new The Residences of Creekside to central Ohio bloggers. A long-time friend, Brian Hoyt, Gahanna’s Public Information Manager, invited me to attend the unique opportunity so I could share it with my readers.

Like some other suburban communities, Gahanna has revitalized its downtown along the Big Walnut Creek, similar to the famous River Walk in San Antonio, but without the Alamo at the entrance.

First off, The Residences remind me of the clean, cosmopolitan flair that is seen in Toronto where that city offers many mixed-use developments that combine retail, business, and residences with al fresco dining. Mo Dioun, President of The Stonehenge Co., is very proud of his project and rightly so. There is nothing quite like it in central Ohio. Anyone considering a condo in downtown Columbus, should view The Residences before making a final decision. These homes have easy access to I-670 and to Port Columbus, but with the added benefit of greenery, along with other benefits of suburban living, like grocery stores. Residents also have private parking on the same floor as their home, greatly easing carrying items from their car to their home after shopping.

For better viewing, click on the MENU icon, then FULL SCREEN.

The homes on the west side of the building have a view of Big Walnut Creek. The view to the south is the Creekside Park consisting of the river walk, a fountain area and other colorful retail/business offices. During warmer weather, paddle boats are available for the waterway. There are five levels, with a wonderful rooftop pool and cabana area, reminiscent of a Phoenix spa. Off the entertaining pool area is a large fitness center to help residents stay in shape. Naturally, I had to ask if pets are allowed and they are, however, residents are responsible for ensuring the pet doesn’t intrude on others.

The homes range in size from 815 sq ft to 3800 sq ft and cost between $199,000 to $1,200,000, with a 15-year 100% tax abatement. There are 14 different floor plans with 1-, 2- and 3-bedrooms. The plan called for 71 residences, however, some buyers have joined units to increase the size which will reduce the number of units. We viewed one such residence (in contract) where the buyer is joining two corner units giving them a wonderful south & west view. The company offers an in-house design center to assist residents in planning their decorating options.

A special thanks goes to Mo, Adam Trautner (VP, Stonehenge Co), Sadicka White (Dir of Planning & Economic Development, Gahanna City), of course, Brian and to the residents who were kind enough to speak with us.

FTC Disclosure: The bloggers were given a bottle of wine and dinner for 2 at Mezzo Italian. Since I’m not a wine fancier and doubt that Mezzo would consider The Murph an acceptable dining companion, I’ll be “regifting”.
