Can social media help your business? Lots of companies are exploring that, but since it’s hard to measure ROI or immediate impact, they may be leery of it. I participate in both Twitter and Facebook, but I find Twitter much more beneficial. I use it as both a connection tool and as a news feed of current events.
With Twitter, I’ve “met” local people and enjoy chatting with them. Some of them have their own small businesses that they are trying to promote.
@3babesandabaker has a Cupcake Truck at the corner of Gay & High Sts in downtown Columbus. Each Saturday she encourages fellow tweeple to give her their guess for the final OSU score. The person coming the closest gets free cupcakes. Last Saturday, I was one of the winners so I
picked up my yummy cupcakes today. They were scrumptious! While I was there, I purchased a delightful brat from a nearby hotdog truck. >>>>
@DreamDinnersOH offers a place to fix your own meals, then take them home to freeze. It’s located in Powell next to my office. If you use Twitter, I highly recommend following these local people. Unlike some, they actually engage in conversation and don’t just put out auto-tweet ads. I believe this Saturday is to be small business day to counter the Black Friday that supports the mega stores. Support a local small business this weekend.

Last night was the first game of the OSU Buckeye season and they trounced Marshall 45-7. Since I don’t subscribe to cable, I rely on Twitter to keep me informed during the game. While there were a lot of tweets on the game, there were also some about a local news anchor who made somewhat of a “whoops” on the air. Lovely Andrea Cambern SHOULD have said “Buckeye Nuts“, but she left out the all important word ‘Buckeye’. I suspect it will be awhile before she lives down her ‘sweaty nuts’ comment.

Some members of my family and I went down to see Red, White & Boom! in person last night. The event was celebrating its 30th year. I hadn’t been down there since year 2 & 3. Since then, I’ve watched it on TV. I must say there is nothing like seeing AND hearing it in person. The reverberations that impact your body are simply awesome.
Some people stake out their “ideal” space early in the day. We didn’t leave to go there until 6:30 pm which at that time of night, we expected to be stuck in traffic. However, my daughter decided to take High St all the way down from southern Delaware County and surprisingly it proved to be a good way to go. My granddaughters, who live in a small rural town, were treated to some of the more “colorful” parts of Columbus between OSU and downtown. At one stop light, a unique odor infiltrated the car. (I was glad to learn they didn’t know what it was.) Needless to say the people’s actions and manner of dress were different than found in their town.
My daughter had purchased space in one of the parking lots, which can be done online. We were just north of the arena district, so it was very handy. As we walked closer to the final event, we were treated to LOTS of good smelling food vendors and various bands. I tried taking videos of the bands on my Blackberry, but the sound volume proved too much for the little microphone.
It took awhile but we finally found a place to sit. I took some video with my Nikon CoolPix, but you have to overlook the street lamp and the vendor tent.
The prettiest display is about 4 minutes into the display. It seemed to be the crowd favorite, even moreso than the finale.
As an aside, I was disappointed at the number of people who didn’t stand for the National Anthem. Shame on those people. Need to beef-up the patriotism.

I went to the Easton Town Center to have lunch with my first-born’s family to celebrate her birthday. I can’t tell you which birthday it is as she wouldn’t speak to me again. All I want to say is that I was only 2 years old when she was born.
I don’t like to shop so I’ve never gone to Easton to shop, although a LOT of people do. Until today, I had only been to Mitchell’s Ocean Club when some clients took me there after we closed on their home (it was WONDERFUL!)
Today we went to Bon Vie, which is a favorite of my daughter.

We ate from the brunch menu, so I had Eggs Benedict, although the quiche that others ordered looked very good.
Afterward we walked through the grounds where tons of people were enjoying a very nice, warm day.
People were casually eating on outside patios at restaurants that offer al fresco dining.
The two water fountains were popular, especially the one where kiddies can cavort in the many upward sprays.
How tempting would it be to “tap” the guy in the black shirt?
One tap and SPLASH!

Riverside Hospital … a good place to stay if you have to.
Health care has obviously been in the news a LOT in the past year. This past week, I was able to see first-hand how much different it is now. I’ve been blessed with a very healthy life so haven’t been in a hospital since 1972 when my last child was born. I spent three days at Riverside Hospital this week, and was amazed at the difference.

Riverside is one of the main hospitals in Columbus, achieving international recognition. What struck me most were the built-in efficiencies from the color-coded parking lots & buildings to the UPC codes on our wristbands which were scanned every time someone did something to us. Each room had a computer and anytime anything was done to us, it was noted on the computer. Certainly is better than misinterpreting handwriting or dealing with paper charts.
While on the surface, the procedures seem a little like being on an assembly line, the procedures actually make it easier for the patient. You go here to do this … go there to do that. The monster machines whir and click as they peer into your innermost parts. The staff wears little pager-sized gizmos that records their whereabouts when they pass by a sensor as they enter a room. Then if they are needed, they are paged. Much quieter than the old days of “paging Dr Shoemaker“.
Of course, two things haven’t changed … they still wake you up in the middle of the night … and they haven’t solved that darn hospital gown exposure thing.
Columbus is home to other great hospitals as well.
