A Columbus Doxie Tweet-Up?

It’s been awhile since The Murph wrote an article here. He just learned of an event being held in Houston, TX and asked if he could share it with HIS fans. Since he’s had such a tough time with this snow that’s deeper than he is tall, I decided to humor him because I feel sorry for him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
dachshund in car seatWhen Mom’s not looking, I take over her laptop and search for doggie articles on the Internet. Specifically articles on dachshunds. That’s why she had to spend a lot of money having her laptop fixed because my dog hair ruined some of the parts. The repair shop told her to keep “THE DOG” (that’s me) away from it. Hah! Fat chance of that happening.
I’ve decided that Houston might be a fun place to live … not just because they don’t get a bunch of snow. They’re having wiener dog races this month. I can run really, really fast so I’m sure I would do well.
They’re also having a dachshund tweet-up/meet-up. Now, that certainly would be a lot of fun. Not sure what facility would be willing to host the event … Doxies can be pretty noisy. It’s our duty to bark … even if it seems we’re barking for no reason at all. And we can bark really ((((LOUD))))! That’s so the hunter can hear us when we’re in the rabbit hole. I wonder if the humans wear ear plugs at these events.
I must talk to Mom about organizing a tweet-up here in the Columbus area. I know that she tweets with other local Doxie parents … I can see that because I curl up next to the laptop … which I’m not supposed to do … but I digress …
Help Pet Organizations Help Pets In Need
Not every dog leads the comfortable life that The Murph does. They don’t have sweaters or coats to keep them warm when they go outside. They may not have a warm bed to sleep in, but may have to sleep on the cold ground. They may have to go to bed with an empty belly and frozen water bowl.
YOU CAN HELP!
With the tough economy, people are being forced to turn their pets into the shelters because they can no longer afford to feed or care for their pet. A local pet day care (Camp Bow Wow) is having a donation day tomorrow to assist the Pet Pantry and Columbus Dog Connection to help needy people with pet food and supplies so those people don’t have to surrender their pets for financial reasons.
Take your donations to Camp Bow Wow, 5100 Nike Dr, Hilliard on Saturday, Dec 12 between 10am-2pm. See their web site at www.campbowwow.com for the list of requested items.
The Columbus Dog Connection web site also has a donation page that lists the needs for other shelters in other counties. If you help with Habitat for Humanity, perhaps you can also help with Habitat for Dogmanity by helping to build dog houses for pets without outside shelter, or to give the materials to build such houses.
You can also check these web sites which have “wish list” requests for their shelter animals: Capital Area Humane SocietyFranklin County Animal ShelterDelaware County Humane Society
If you’re like me, you may have leashes, collars, bowls, beds, sweaters, coats, that were used for pets that are now sadly gone. I know I have such items from my three Dobies that are way too big for The Murph. I think it’s time to give them to other pets.
Will my house be in violation of Delaware County zoning codes?
Tiny bird nest
My home is zoned for single-family residential. I think it might be in violation of the zoning code. It’s become a multi-family home.
I took a Sunday off from the usual open house stint, to do some mulching, edging and pruning. When pruning the flowering crab apple tree, I noticed a tiny bird nest.
At first I thought I had finally found a hummingbird nest since they’re regular visitors. However, although the nest was tiny, I don’t think it was small enough for a hummingbird. May belong to the chickadees or goldfinches.
I got my ladder to take a close up photo. When I was “in” the tree, I noticed a second nearby same-sized nest. I was a little surprised as I thought birds didn’t build their nests so close together.
Larger bird nest
As I turned around to climb down the ladder, I noticed a 3rd larger nest with some thin plastic woven in the twigs. I’ve seen both robins and doves come out of this tree so this larger nest probably belongs to one of them.
Pyracantha
Pyracantha
Another pair of robins seem to favor a pyracantha near the back door. In fact, I planted it for them and the other berry eating birds so they’ll have food in the winter. That’s when they make a run on the orange berries.
This summer “something” else is using the thorny barrier of the pyracantha for shelter. When The Murph goes out the final time at night, there is sometimes “something” hidden in the shrub that scares him. Its movement makes him jump and then run up the steps to come back in the house.
Then there are the chipmunks. They have tunnels everywhere, plus, they bury the birds’ sunflower seeds so I have little outcroppings of sunflower sprouts in most of my landscape beds.
And of course, there are the rabbits! They’ve raised numerous families under the five Norway spruces since I planted the trees years ago. They began living there when I had Brutus, my 3rd Murph & RabbitDobie. Brutie never bothered them and they quickly learned that they didn’t have to run when he came into the yard.
Not so with The Murph. When he’s out, they keep a watchful eye, ever ready to scamper under the fence if need be. The Murph after all IS a rabbit-hunting breed. I know when there is a new batch of babies because The Murph sometimes has rabbit fur stuck to his nose from his sniffing around the rabbit hole that is lined with the mama’s fur.
I’m glad that the wildlife has adopted my home as their own, It’s rather fun living in a multi-family home – even if it isn’t zoned for that.
It’s a Happy Birthday day …
The Murph has reached the old age of 5 years old today. He was born June 24, 2004. In celebration, I gave him a couple bites of a Klondike bar without the chocolate coating. He’s been allowed to take his all-day nap … but he does that most days with or without a birthday.
Here’s a photo I took of him as a baby when he first picked me to live with him. Look at those legs. He’s hardly taller than the woodwork.
Murphy responds to doxie-killing cop story
The Murph ask to be a Guest Writer for this post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mom just told me about a tweet from NBC4 regarding a news story about a Danville VA cop shooting an 11-year old miniature dachshund. The officer was serving a warrant at a neighbor’s home when “Killer” began running toward the officer.

Later, Killer’s owner spoke with the officer who by now was leaning against his patrol car, smoking a cigarette. The officer said “he had to shoot the dog because it was BARKING at him.”

For all the trigger-happy cops out there, here’s an instruction manual on miniature doxies:

  • Dachshunds BARK and we do that very, very well. We have what is called a “sharp” bark. That’s so we can be heard when we’re down in the rabbit hole.
  • Miniature doxies aren’t supposed to weigh more than 11 lbs per the AKC standards. You can kick us away … you don’t have to shoot us.
  • We’re called “ankle biters” for a reason. Have you checked out the length of our legs? At best, we’ll tear a hole in your socks.
  • Our teeth aren’t sharp because we’re supposed to retrieve rabbits without harming the pelt.
  • We try really hard to protect our families and therefore, sound the alert to our loved ones. You, Mr. Cop, were an unknown intruder into the neighborhood. Killer was merely warning his family of potential danger. I do the same thing when the meter reader walks by my back door.
  • Killer was 11-years old. That’s 77 in human years. That’s like the cop that tasered the 72-yr old grandma.

I feel sorry for Killer’s family.

The Murph has “Fav’s”

The Murph got another present from a blog reader. This one arrived in the mail addressed to Murphy Reese. It’s an official Hershey’s® Reese’s® dog pillow. He seems to enjoy “hanging over” but LOVES curling up to take one of his many naps as well.
