The Winter That Wasn’t?

Can you believe the “winter” we’re having this year? Last year it got cold the first part of December and didn’t let up until April. We really haven’t had a true winter this year. That’s OK with me.

This afternoon – Feb 2 – I actually saw a landscape crew working. That’s a help for them since those companies haven’t been able to make any money by plowing snow this year. There are other companies, like the ski slopes, that are probably hurting due to the lack of snow and warmer temps that prevent even making snow.

Buckeye Chuck – the Ohio groundhog version to Puxatawny Phil – didn’t see his shadow today so according to the tale, that’s supposed to mean an early spring for Ohio.

Last summer when I had to have a new AC unit installed, I also had them do a new, more efficient furnace. While the heat coming from the registers is much warmer, I don’t really know how much I’m saving due to its efficiency. So far, I’ve spent $90 less for the three months but that could just be due to the warmer temps.

I just hope our lack of winter so far doesn’t mean that winter will arrive in March, as it sometimes does.

Predictions for 2012

I’m catching up on my Internet reading after a couple of days off for the Christmas holiday. It seems everyone is making their predictions for 2012. There are predictions for the real estate market, for the stock market, for the USA elections, and for the global upheavals.

How’s this … my prediction is that everyone will be wrong.

As we learned in 2011, all these issues are closely tied together. A blurp in one results in a blurp in another. “For every action, there is a reaction.”

Naturally, the people I associate with are most interested in what the real estate market will do. Will it be better, flat or worse? The latest data that I read said that 2011 was the worst year ever. Real estate “experts” are making their predictions. I doubt that their predictions are any more reliable than my predictions would be. There are simply too many variables.

Most of those variables are reliant on the Federal government’s policies, which haven’t been positive for recovery of the real estate industry. I know a lot of Realtors® who are becoming more politically active to help change or fight for programs that will improve the opportunity for our clients to buy or sell their homes.

Realtors® have a unique job where we become more emotionally attached to our clients. Yes, we make our income by selling a home, but we (or at least a lot of us) really care about the people we’re working with and we try to do the best job we can to help them. The politicians, via their policies or increased regulations, have made that job much more difficult in recent years.

While shopping for Christmas groceries, I met a fellow agent and naturally we talked about business. She mainly works with relo clients – those transferring due to a new job or a promotion. Her business is down because (1) companies can’t afford to move employees around the country as they used to do, and (2) employees are less likely to want to move due to the difficulty of selling their current home, especially if it will be at a loss.

She is currently working with a client who has been offered a promotion that requires him to move from Atlanta to the Columbus area. Apparently, the Atlanta housing market is worse than here, so that the severe loss he will incur on his current home versus the price he would pay for a home here, even with the increased promotion pay, has led him to turn down the promotion. The negative implications of that decision, will impact his long-term earning power, plus, it means at least two fewer home sales. I believe the National Association of Realtors® has said that for every 3 homes sold, one job is created. Multiply this Atlanta executive’s thought process by thousands across the country, and you begin to get a feel for the difficulty the real estate market is having.

protestorSo here’s my 2012 prediction: Watch the news … you may see your favorite Realtor® in an upcoming political protest. We’ve been beat up the past few years and we’re “not going to take it anymore”. :-)

Another idiotic idea from a politician

Blackberry phoneI think I’m going to start a section of my blog that reports only on the stupid things politicians do. Like 60%+ of the nation, I am so disgusted with those folks in DC. They are so out-of-touch with life beyond the beltway.

Fortunately, Twitter provides information on what’s REALLY going on since the mainstream media is too focused on what Hollywood is doing. Here’s a story that you won’t see on the evening news until it’s too late.

Nebraska Congressman proposing a bill to permit robo calls to cellphones

Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb) is sponsoring a bill that would loosen restrictions on telemarketing calls to cellphones.  Here’s his reasoning:

Terry says his bill is a badly-needed update to that law (TCPA 1991) and would only allow calls for “informational purposes” and only to people who opt-in to receive them.

The way he describes the “information”, I think it would be similar to the CODE RED calls that I’ve signed up for from Delaware County to alert me to dangerous weather. I decided to give the CodeRed website my cell number all by myself without any intervention required by the government. I don’t “badly need” or want the government deciding that for me.

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore) said that “now most consumers have buckets of minutes so receiving an additional call costs them nothing“. Maybe HE has buckets of minutes because the Oregon taxpayers are probably paying HIS cell phone, but most people still have limited plans.

Don’t know about you, but I already get robo calls to my cell even though the 1991 Telephone Consumer Protection Act prohibits automated dialing to mobile phones. I currently have 20 such numbers programmed into my cell to block them because they’re spam calls made from bogus numbers, so the do-not-call system doesn’t work.

Walden says he has no intention of “unleashing telemarketers on us”. How many of you believe that if this bill passes, it will only be a matter of time until politicians are excluded and thus, allowed to make their obnoxious robo calls during political elections. If Reps Terry and Walden continue pushing this bill, then I want to know THEIR cell number!

I also wonder why anyone in DC is working on such a worthless bill when they should be working on ways to reduce the deficit, taxes and regulations to help small businesses so they can create jobs for people. Where are their priorities!

Stepping off my soapbox now …

The “Best” Vets in Delaware County!

Murphy, the dachshund, OhioMurph gave me a real scare about 3 weeks ago. All of a sudden he was very sick. Listless, not jumping, not eating, didn’t bark, just slept. I had no idea what might be wrong but suspected it might be a reaction to some “all natural, freeze-dried” food that I had given him a couple of days before. (it wasn’t that)

I took him to the vet. By this time his fever was over 105°.  They decided he needed to stay at the hospital so they could check for ecoli, salmonella and possibly a tick infection. They did X-rays in case he had done something to his back – a real problem for doxies since their vertebrate is a little different from other breeds. They also took blood for a complete blood test.

After a couple of days when there was no improvement, they asked me to bring some chicken to see if he would eat for me, plus it might be helpful for him to see me so he would know I hadn’t abandoned him. He ate the chicken and since his fever was down almost to 102° they thought it might be best if he came home where he would be more comfortable.

The following day, we received the blood test results. His white cell count was extremely low and his platelets were so dangerously low that he was at risk of dying from internal bleeding. The Dr’s words became a blur after that but I heard “OSU, transfusion, marrow transplant, $5,000, might not work, euthanasia”.

The tests the Dr had done ruled out the ecoli, salmonella and ticks. We wracked our brains as to what changed in his life that could have caused this sudden illness. In late August he was put on phenobarbitol for some epilepsy seizures he had one day. This normally safe drug can have a side effect in rare cases where it can deplete the white cell count. Ah-ha!

He was immediately taken off the phenobarb and given a couple of types of antibiotics to protect him from infection since his white cell count wasn’t sufficient to do that. After about 3 days, I began to notice some improvement. Little by little he continued to respond. After nine days, he seemed well enough to have another blood test taken, although the bleeding risk from the needle was unknown.

That test showed that the platelets were back to normal so the bleeding risk was gone. His white cell count had improved but not yet quite to the normal range. The difference was enough to feel that the phenobarb was definitely the culprit. It’s now been three weeks and externally, he seems back to his normal fiesty self.

Best Friends Veterinary Hospital, Powell OH 43065While this has been a somewhat costly endeavor, I’m so glad the Dr kept exploring and making phone calls to various specialists, keeping me updated with frequent phone calls. I know that not all Dr’s would have done this and instead merely suggested euthanasia – and I would have needlessly lost my little buddy.

I began going to Best Friends in 1987 when I took my first Dobie there as a puppy. They cared for my next two Dobes throughout their lives. They’re now caring for The Murph in their new Powell location and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for totally caring group of qualified veterinarians.  I especially appreciate Dr Riggs and Dr Latimer. I also appreciate their asking for people’s well wishes for Murph on their Facebook page.  Just like their name, they’re the BEST!

Why Are People So Angry?

Do you feel as though everyone is acting in the old movie Network? “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

We only need to recall our Psych class from college to understand what’s taking place. Remember Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? His theory was that we need to take care of the basic needs before we can move up the triangle to the next level.

Maslows hierarchy of needs

The past three years, people have been struggling with meeting the bottom two levels of the Maslow triangle. People have lost their HOMES (shelter) for various reasons – some that were under their control and some that were not. People have lost their JOBS which affects shelter, financial security, health, safety net and can affect food and clothing. We’ve had to deal with TERRORISM THREATS, FLOODS, FIRES, HURRICANES, and TORNADOS which impacts our need for personal safety. We’ve lost our financial security/safety net by watching our 401k’s or retirement funds dwindle as the ECONOMY SOURSMEDICAL COSTS and/or insurance costs have escalated so much that people are going uninsured or skipping medical care putting their health at risk.

We’ve been through a lot recently, so it’s no wonder we’re trying so hard to meet our basic needs. We’re afraid!

Who among us has any confidence that Washington DC knows how to get us out of the mess they created. Instead they bicker along party lines or blame those “other guys” rather than bucking up to work together to solve the problems. The only real job they are worried about is their own. But even if THEY lose their job in 2012, unlike regular citizens, they’ll still have THEIR medical benefits and pension for life even though they may have only served one term. How many regular citizens can work 4 years for a company and receive that kind of benefit package?

Whether it’s the conservative Tea Party or the liberal Occupy protests, both groups are essentially trying to fight for the two bottom rows of the triangle. It would be good if the politicians recognized these Maslow Needs of the citizens they are supposed to be working for, and worry less about generating millions of dollars in re-election campaign funds. Rather than giving yet another non-effective stimulus package to their cronies, put the money directly into the hands of taxpayers and let US spend it. Doing that will create demand which will create jobs which will allow people to keep their homes or buy new ones which creates jobs. See how it works!

Otherwise the citizens are apt to respond as Dr Huxtable (Bill Cosby) did to his TV son, Theo: “I brought you into this world … I can take you out! ”

Will your land line decide to call 911?

police cars delaware ohio 43015Yesterday morning I had a wake-up call that scared the bejeezus out of me. Murph’s shrill warning bark actually woke me up, then I heard someone knocking loudly on my door. I peeked out the blinds to see two police cars with lights flashing, sitting in front of my home and could see a portion of a police uniform at my door.

Since police are seldom in my neighborhood, especially at that hour, I didn’t know what to expect. Would guns be drawn????

The officer asked if I had called 911. I hadn’t. He then asked if my phone number was xxx-xxx-xxxx. It was an old land line number that I had canceled 3-4 years ago when I went with my cell phone exclusively. He told me to call the phone company to report it because sometimes these unused lines transmit noise that calls 911. When the 911 operator doesn’t receive a response, they notify the police.

A Facebook friend, who is a retired telecommunications engineer, gave this info.  ”Water shorts or static on a land line can look like the old-fashioned dial pulses used on the old dial phones and the pulses can sometimes look like the digits 911 ( 9 pulses, 1 pulse, 1 pulse)….. not that uncommon.

Trying to call Verizon was no small feat because none of their automated options dealt with this problem. Finally, today I was able to speak with a “real” person who had heard of this happening. She took all my info and will report it. I’m not sure what will be PJ'sdone, but I’ll keep you posted. As more people cancel their land line phones, this problem may become better known.

Let this be a warning to all of you who have also canceled land lines … WEAR PJ’S! You never know when the police will knock on your door. BTW, I told the officer that he might want to stick around since my adrenalin was so high that I might just have a heart attack and really need their help. :-)
