Get to know small businesses on Twitter

Can social media help your business? Lots of companies are exploring that, but since it’s hard to measure ROI or immediate impact, they may be leery of it. I participate in both Twitter and Facebook, but I find Twitter much more beneficial. I use it as both a connection tool and as a news feed of current events.

With Twitter, I’ve “met” local people and enjoy chatting with them. Some of them have their own small businesses that they are trying to promote.

  • 3 Babes & A Baker cupcake truck in downtown Columbus OH@3babesandabaker has a Cupcake Truck at the corner of Gay & High Sts in downtown Columbus. Each Saturday she encourages fellow tweeple to give her their guess for the final OSU score. The person coming the closest gets free cupcakes. Last Saturday, I was one of the winners so I hot dog truck in downtown Columbus OHpicked up my yummy cupcakes today. They were scrumptious! While I was there, I purchased a delightful brat from a nearby hotdog truck. >>>>
  • @dogwatchohio has an electronic pet fence business. The Murph already has a regular fence, but if I was in the market for an electronic fence, I would call the DogWatch family. They seem like nice people and I enjoy their funny dog photos.
  • @DraperyDiva owns a window covering business called Home Source, located on Rt 315 in the Mount Air area north of I-270. It’s a great place to shop for quality blinds, shades, etc. We’re having a tweet-up there this Saturday morning to celebrate OSU’s win over that state up north. So I’ll get to meet a lot of other tweeples in person.
  • Dream Dinners, Powell OH@DreamDinnersOH offers a place to fix your own meals, then take them home to freeze. It’s located in Powell next to my office.
  • @DanielleNeil is a photographer that takes graduation photos and pet photos. What she is capable of doing with the dogs is awesome!
  • @HillsMarket is a popular grocery store known for high-quality meats and deli. In their tweets, they let us know when special foods have arrived or special food events are planned. They also are located on Rt 315 just north of I-270, opposite the entrance to Worthington Hills.
  • @AllonsTravel has a travel agency. She does extensive traveling to be able to recommend special places for her clients. As might be expected, she’s started getting inquiries for the Bucks Bowl Game destination.
  • @HoneyGrove has a boutique natural candle shop in Creekside Gahanna. Some of the candle flavors she mentions sound good enough to eat.
  • @OhioBrian is a communications manager for the city of Gahanna. He keeps everyone apprised of the events being held there and in particular the Creekside area.
  • Thanks to @joingles and @annfisherwosu I am watching more PBS to catch their local & state news, and discussions.

If you use Twitter, I highly recommend following these local people. Unlike some, they actually engage in conversation and don’t just put out auto-tweet ads. I believe this Saturday is to be small business day to counter the Black Friday that supports the mega stores. Support a local small business this weekend.

Riverside Hospital … a good place to stay if you have to.

Health care has obviously been in the news a LOT in the past year. This past week, I was able to see first-hand how much different it is now. I’ve been blessed with a very healthy life so haven’t been in a hospital since 1972 when my last child was born. I spent three days at Riverside Hospital this week, and was amazed at the difference.

Riverside is one of the main hospitals in Columbus, achieving international recognition. What struck me most were the built-in efficiencies from the color-coded parking lots & buildings to the UPC codes on our wristbands which were scanned every time someone did something to us. Each room had a computer and anytime anything was done to us, it was noted on the computer. Certainly is better than misinterpreting handwriting or dealing with paper charts.

While on the surface, the procedures seem a little like being on an assembly line, the procedures actually make it easier for the patient. You go here to do this … go there to do that. The monster machines whir and click as they peer into your innermost parts.  The staff wears little pager-sized gizmos that records their whereabouts when they pass by a sensor as they enter a room. Then if they are needed, they are paged. Much quieter than the old days of “paging Dr Shoemaker“.

Of course, two things haven’t changed … they still wake you up in the middle of the night … and they haven’t solved that darn hospital gown exposure thing.

Columbus is home to other great hospitals as well.

Did Andrea really say that?

Buckeye nutsLast night was the first game of the OSU Buckeye season and they trounced Marshall 45-7. Since I don’t subscribe to cable, I rely on Twitter to keep me informed during the game. While there were a lot of tweets on the game, there were also some about a local news anchor who made somewhat of a “whoops” on the air. Lovely Andrea Cambern SHOULD have said “Buckeye Nuts“, but she left out the all important word ‘Buckeye’. I suspect it will be awhile before she lives down her ‘sweaty nuts’ comment.

Red, White & BOOM! in downtown Columbus

Some members of my family and I went down to see Red, White & Boom! in person last night. The event was celebrating its 30th year. I hadn’t been down there since year 2 & 3. Since then, I’ve watched it on TV. I must say there is nothing like seeing AND hearing it in person.  The reverberations that impact your body are simply awesome.

Some people stake out their “ideal” space early in the day. We didn’t leave to go there until 6:30 pm which at that time of night, we expected to be stuck in traffic. However, my daughter decided to take High St all the way down from southern Delaware County and surprisingly it proved to be a good way to go. My granddaughters, who live in a small rural town, were treated to some of the more “colorful” parts of Columbus between OSU and downtown. At one stop light, a unique odor infiltrated the car. (I was glad to learn they didn’t know what it was.) Needless to say the people’s actions and manner of dress were different than found in their town.

My daughter had purchased space in one of the parking lots, which can be done online. We were just north of the arena district, so it was very handy. As we walked closer to the final event, we were treated to LOTS of good smelling food vendors and various bands. I tried taking videos of the bands on my Blackberry, but the sound volume proved too much for the little microphone.

It took awhile but we finally found a place to sit. I took some video with my Nikon CoolPix, but you have to overlook the street lamp and the vendor tent. :-) The prettiest display is about 4 minutes into the display. It seemed to be the crowd favorite, even moreso than the finale.

As an aside, I was disappointed at the number of people who didn’t stand for the National Anthem. Shame on those people. Need to beef-up the patriotism.

Enjoyed a sunny day at Easton Town Center

I went to the Easton Town Center to have lunch with my first-born’s family to celebrate her birthday. I can’t tell you which birthday it is as she wouldn’t speak to me again. All I want to say is that I was only 2 years old when she was born. ;-)

I don’t like to shop so I’ve never gone to Easton to shop, although a LOT of people do. Until today, I had only been to Mitchell’s Ocean Club when some clients took me there after we closed on their home (it was WONDERFUL!

Today we went to Bon Vie, which is a favorite of my daughter.

Eggs Benedict from Bon Vie, Easton Town Center, Columbus Ohio

We ate from the brunch menu, so I had Eggs Benedict, although the quiche that others ordered looked very good.

Afterward we walked through the grounds where tons of people were enjoying a very nice, warm day.

Fountain at Easton Town Center, Columbus OhioPeople were casually eating on outside patios at restaurants that offer al fresco dining.

The two water fountains were popular, especially the one where kiddies can cavort in the many upward sprays.

How tempting would it be to “tap” the guy in the black shirt?

One tap and SPLASH!

OK, everyone in Columbus, put your thumbs down

Blackberry Curve keyboardColumbus City Council just voted to ban texting, as have a number of cities. I don’t disagree with the intent but I’m never quite sure how you legislate against stupidity. Just as dangerous are all the other things we do in our cars beside paying attention to driving. Have you ever turned toward the back seat to yell at the kids? Ever spilled your “special sauce” in your lap and tried to mop it up?

Back to the texting issue, I have some questions that I’ve not heard answered by the media yet. I understand the texting issue, but we do lots of things with this keyboard that don’t constitute “texting”.

  • Is it OK to dial a phone number?
  • Will the new law include when we’re sitting at a stop light or in a traffic jam and want to check our email? Do the wheels have to be rolling for it to apply? After all, it’s “texting while DRIVING”.
  • What about taking a photo?
  • How will the police know the difference when we’re pushing the keys for making a call vs texting?
  • Will this cause people to hold the phone below the window line and thus, really take their eyes off the road?

I don’t text while driving, and I wait till I’m at a stop light to place a call, so I don’t think I’ll impacted by the law. I also don’t drive that much within the actual Columbus city limits since much of my driving is in Delaware County or the Franklin County suburbs. Now, if they ever decide to totally ban cell phone use then that’s another matter.
