Dublin is getting prepped for The Memorial

Memorial Tournament flags, Dublin Ohio 43017Next week is the PGA Memorial Tournament, but as usual, this week Muirfield Village is getting all “prettied up” ready to put on a good show to all the media, dignitaries and thousands of guests that will be in Dublin for the event.

The special flags have been installed on the light poles and parking signs are up. All the landscaping is well-manicured. It’s very common to see many landscape crews working on resident’s lawns. Some of them rent their homes out for the week, then stay in local hotels. I knew a family who did that, as it was a money-maker for them.

Muirfield Village, Dublin Ohio 43017The Tournament begins May 31 with practice rounds through June 2. On June 1, there is a Military Appreciation Day. Those with appropriate military ID can enter for free. The Skins Game is on June 2, plus it’s Junior Golf Day, so kids under 18 can get in free with a ticketed adult. The actual tournament runs June 3 -6. At this time, Tiger is reported to be playing. (no comment)

I was offered tickets for one of the practice rounds, but decided to pass on them. I don’t trust Chief Leatherlips and what he may do to the weather.

I used to play quite a bit of golf years ago. I played in a weekly league and often played another 18 on the weekend. I really enjoyed the game, but naturally had the usual frustrations that can go with it. Thanks to my previous career, I had the opportunity to play at many nice resorts in Florida, Arizona and Colorado. I couldn’t drive as far as the guys did, but I hit it straight and was pretty good at chipping and putting, so I held my own.

I previously wrote an article about one particular golf outing where I hit my husband with a driver. No it wasn’t a story like Tiger, as it was an accident. It really was.

Read more about Muirfield and view a slide show.

Enjoyed a sunny day at Easton Town Center

I went to the Easton Town Center to have lunch with my first-born’s family to celebrate her birthday. I can’t tell you which birthday it is as she wouldn’t speak to me again. All I want to say is that I was only 2 years old when she was born. ;-)

I don’t like to shop so I’ve never gone to Easton to shop, although a LOT of people do. Until today, I had only been to Mitchell’s Ocean Club when some clients took me there after we closed on their home (it was WONDERFUL!

Today we went to Bon Vie, which is a favorite of my daughter.

We ate from the brunch menu, so I had Eggs Benedict, although the quiche that others ordered looked very good.

Afterward we walked through the grounds where tons of people were enjoying a very nice, warm day.

The two water fountains were popular, especially the one where kiddies can cavort in the many upward sprays.

How tempting would it be to “tap” the guy in the black shirt?

One tap and SPLASH!

I have the most wonderful clients!

I have been so fortunate during my almost 12 years in the real estate business to have some of the most wonderful clients. Today was another example of why I love this business so much. Look what was waiting for me when I arrived in the office. Is that a phenomenal bouquet or what!!!! Thank you so much, Chris & Suzi.

What is a patio home?

Here in central Ohio, we have what we call “patio homes”. Some might also refer to them as “cluster homes”. Buyers sometimes ask what exactly is a patio home and how does it differ from a free-standing condo.

Generally speaking, a patio home is owned just like a regular home. You own the home and the lot and are responsible for all the upkeep. That’s how they differ from a condo, where the owner only owns from “paint in” and pays a fee each month to the condo association.

Patio homes generally can be larger-size homes with many upgrades and extra amenities. Regarding amenities, I showed one once where the basement had been dug deeper to allow for a mini driving range. Patio homes are on smaller sized lots so there is less lawn to maintain. Having a smaller lot places the homes closer together, hence the alternate name of “cluster homes”. Carefully placed landscaping can assure greater privacy to decks or patios.

Since the owners may want to avoid some of the lawn and snow clean-up but don’t want to give up total ownership as with a condo, they sometimes go together as a group to hire landscape companies to handle the lawn & landscape care and snow removal as needed.

Patio homes aren’t as readily available around the Columbus metro area as are condos. In southern Delaware County, they tend (but not exclusively) to be located in golf course communities such as Wedgewood, Golf Village, Muirfield, Highland Lakes and Medallion. Prices may range from $300,000 to $6-700,000. Our MLS system has a check-box for agents to identify patio homes which then allows buyer’s agents to conduct searches for that criteria.

If you are wishing you had a smaller lawn to maintain, but don’t want to give up a more luxurious home, then perhaps a patio home may just fit your wish list. Give me a call and we’ll see what’s available.

Just helping homeowners with their landscaping.

“How big will barberries get?” That’s a recent question someone asked of a Google search when landing on this blog. I’m assuming Google directed the person here because I’ve written about the barberries in my landscaping in the past.

barberry & arbovitaeThe answer to that question depends on the variety of barberry. I happen to have both the pygmy and the regular size. The pygmy size is planted on an east side slope of my home. It’s an area that I selected plants where I could pretty much forget about them. The area receives less rain because it’s shielded by the house, plus, my hose doesn’t easily reach there. Yes, I could buy more hose, but then it wouldn’t all fit on the hose reel attached to the opposite side of the house. See, that’s my rationale. :-)

The pygmies (in the photo above) are several years old and have not been pruned. They provide a nice contrast to the golden globe arborvitae and to the large variegated willow shrub.

barberries & pyracanthaOn the west side of my house, I’ve planted the large barberries. Per the tag when I purchased them, they are to reach a max height and width of 6 ft. Because the west side receives more of the winter winds, I’ve had to sometimes prune off the winter damage. Even so, they are now about 4 ft tall. I chose the taller variety here in order to hide the sump pump pipes and the gas meter.

The green shrub to the left is a pyracantha that is about to bloom. In the fall, it will have decorative orange berries which robins will feast on when they return late winter. The robin (she’s a regular) likes to build her nest in the pyracantha and a bunny builds a winter “rabbit hole” in the ground. The pyracantha extends out about 4 ft on the other side of the fence. While The Murph knows the bunny is there, he can’t get to it due to the thorns. Smart bunny!

When doing any planting around your home, as any good home inspector will tell you, remember to keep the plants at least 3 ft away from the house and to grade the ground to slope away from the home to avoid basement issues. Although these plants may not appear to be, they are 3 ft away from my foundation.

One further hint is that whenever I need to prune the barberries, I put small pieces of the branches under the bird feeders. Their thorny stems make the patrolling cats stay away. Sorry cat lovers, but I like my birds.

Great News for Jan-Apr 2010 Housing Sales

WOW! Most agents were pretty busy in April as buyers hustled to take advantage of the gov’t Tax Credits that would expire the end of April. Lots of homes closed plus many more went into contract. Here’s the results for Jan-Apr 2010 as compared to 2009 for the number of homes sold in some of the school districts around metro Columbus.

  • Worthington SD home sales were up 35% vs 2009.
  • Hilliard SD home sales were up 32% vs 2009.
  • Buckeye Valley SD home sales were up 27% vs 2009.
  • Olentangy SD home sales were up 23% vs 2009.
  • Delaware SD home sales were up 9% vs 2009.
  • Dublin SD home sales were up 2% vs 2009.
  • Big Walnut SD home sales were down 9% vs 2009.

The white bars in the graph show the number of homes that are in-contract as of May 4, when I pulled this data from the MLS system. So the sales should remain strong for May as more homes go into contract during May.

The housing sales shown above only include single family homes that were in the CBR MLS system. It does not include condos or new builds, unless those new builds were entered into the MLS system.
