Have you ever visited the Google section called Images? You can search for photos by keyword. Underneath each photo is the web site where Google captured the image just as they capture the summaries for topic searches. Did you know all those images belong to people and are not available to save or link to?
Did you know that right-clicking and saving them to your computer or linking to them is a violation of copyright laws?
In reality, Google should be informing people at the top of the page that doing anything other than looking at the photos is a violation of copyright laws. They don’t. It’s not until one right-clicks on the photo that Google has a teeny-tiny phrase that says the photos “might” be subject to copyright laws.
I’m writing this because I’ve had a bunch of referral links to my old blog to the photos I have there. The links are coming from Texas, Oregon, Massachusetts, Spain, Germany, Indonesia and other foreign countries. I’m sure those people are stealing my images, including one of The Murph in his OSU outfit.
I’m surprised someone hasn’t sued Google for not doing a better job of informing people of the laws in their headline. Just because something is on the internet, doesn’t mean it’s available for public use. Jimmy Carter, the former President, learned this the hard way!Copyright © 2007. I should be in bed but I am reading your pretty blog. It is quite the visual, imagining The Murph all decked out on display in Indonesia! I find that most of my photos come from clipart; or I take them myself. I called the Cleve Art Museum once and asked if I could use a photo of Victor Schreckengost’s Jazz Age bowl on my blog; they said I’d hear within seven days if it was accepted. They turned me down. That is one time I really wanted to be able to do it. But we do have to ask!
Carole, I’ll be watching to see if Murph’s photo shows up in some of the dog photos that friends often send me.
Hi Elaine,
First of all, your blog is beautiful. Great job!!! Secondly, where would you go to get free images? Just curious if you have suggestions.
THANKS!
Irina, thanks for stopping by. I don’t use free photos from the internet, but I know other Rainers have some sources they use. I think most use photos from sites that provide them for small fees with permission to use without violating the copyright laws. Might want to check the tags on AR for ‘photos’. There’s been several posts on the subject.
I too am enjoying the new blog! Congrats Ms. Elaine.
To help Irina, my favorite is Stock.xchng which is a collection of royalty-free images. I have used stockphoto.com in the past and it is $1 per image for those that work for the Web. Both of them are nice, Stock.xchng is free so it has been getting more use from me recently. And if you attribute the image and drop them a note, you can even get some referred readers.
Toby, thanks for helping Irina.
they have been in court, read up on your stuff before you comment
Sven, check the date of Toby’s comment before you judge him. He may have revised his thoughts in the past year since he posted that.
